It's a landmark day, as we have our first Palin
gaffe. Personally, I don't think much will come of this one. Even though it's about a serious issue, the actual workings of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, it doesn't seem soundbite worthy. But, I'm hoping it's part of a trend. So, I plan on trying to keep a Palin Gaffe Count. I guess this is probably our best hope for the Gibson interview, that he'll ask her a question about something she hadn't really prepared for and that she trips up.

and this is just domestic policy! anyone who reads the freakin paper should understand fannie mae.
i can't wait to hear her opine on foreign policy. she's probably studying a world map as we speak.
Full disclosure: I read the paper and I'd be hard-pressed to come up with an accurate description of Fannie Mae. But, then again, I'm not running for veep.
The more I think about this, though, the more I think this gaffe should be more significant than it ultimately will be. By declaring that Fannie and Freddie had become too expensive for taxpayers, is she suggesting that the bailout is a bad idea? And, she shows that she doesn't understand that a lack of regulation played a large role in the mortgage crisis.
She's got a lot to study, and there's no way she could get up to speed on everything in such a sort amount of time. But, maybe in pouring over world maps she can find that elusive Iraq-Afghanistan border.
i think she thought they're tax-payer funded entities and not private. she made these comments before the bailout announcement.
I do enjoy me some fannie mae mint meltaways!
What?
Please vote on which appropriate approach the Obama campaign should take to Palin:
A)
since she is acting as the "attack dog", respond in kind and belittle her lack of meaningful experience, her extremist views, and her lies about The Bridge to Nowhere and taking earmarks.
B)Ignore her. People vote the top of the ticket, not the VP.
C)Link her to Mcain/Bush. Treat her as McCain's equal, in the worst possible way.
Instead of talking about Bush/McCain. Add/Palin. "the Bush/McCain/Palin bunch doesn't care about working class people...."
D) something smart, effective and appropriate (unlike any of A, B or C).
I would say C, with some elements of A mixed in. Palin has a lot of Bushy qualities that can be added to the story, e.g., abuse of power and executive priviledge. Her lack of understanding of economic policy also helps with the "doesn't get it" tag.
Interesting, John, Nate Silver proposes more of an A approach. His thought is to come out with an anti-Palin ad that pushes her earmark grubbing ways in Wasilla. He even came up with an awesome graphic they could use. See it and his argument here: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/obama-needs-more-better-ads.html
