Next DNC Chair

Slowly...very slowly, I am starting to let political news back into my life. What have I missed?

Anyway, we talked a bit on Saturday about who should lead the DNC going forward. Slate's Michelle Goldberg makes a compelling case for Ellison as the next DNC chair. I'm particularly swayed by her argument that Ellison will be a more credible voice and leader for the people most threatened by this presidency.

But...Dean does have a successful track record in the role and this election broke my faith in my own political instincts. So I really don't know which would be the best choice right now. What do you all think?

Ilyse Hogue is also thinking of running (she's currently head of NARAL but I got to work with her at Sustain and LaSalle Bank -- she. is. awesome!). Her point that the position should be full-time is a persuasive one to me though I still like Ellison a lot. Still noodling this over...

I've also seen that Jaime Harrison, the South Carolina Democratic Party Chair, has thrown his hat in the ring. I know nothing about him, though.

In something that I recently read, Dean mentioned that the job of DNC chair is way too big for a sitting representative to hold. That kind of makes sense but, again, I really don't know much about the actual duties of that job. I really like the idea of a more progressive pick, and for better or worse, I think the person who holds that position will also be a symbol. I like Dean quite a lot but would like to see a woman or a person of color (or a female person of color) in this spot.

I just read the Michelle Goldberg piece and agree with you, Bridget, that it is very compelling. To me, it really comes down to that full-time job question (which you mentioned above, Ilsa, but I missed before citing Dean on that point).
