There are a couple fun new updates on the GOP presidential field. First, the nastiness seems to have ramped up a bit as The Daily Caller, a conservative online rag run by well-known douche bag Tucker Carlson, ran a hit piece on Michelle Bachmann. The Washington Monthly flagged it and highlighted how interesting it is that the Daily Caller ran the piece at all. They surmise that it comes from some oppo research by one of the rival campaigns with the implication that the Daily Caller, and maybe the conservative establishment, wants Bachmann out of the race toot sweet.
The Washington Monthly also has an interesting summary of Newt Gingrich's extreme ping-ponging on the Ryan budget plan. Newt kind of seems like a squirrel caught in the middle of the road trying to figure out the best way to scurry away from an on-coming car. Speaking of Newt, Mother Jones re-released an article they wrote on him in 1984. Even without the last 27 years of skullduggery, Newt sure has a lot of baggage. He really doesn't seem like a viable candidate but since his ego is Trumpesque, he probably doesn't know that.
Finally, Nate has a very long and detailed piece on the impact of Huckabee's departure from the field. He doesn't really come out and say it but it seems to hint at things falling in place for Romney, i.e., the Repug John Kerry.

I think you meant "well-known bow-tied douche bag Tucker Carlson."
I think Romney in an alternate-sane-GOP would be the default candidate. But his "Romneycare" albatross and his Mormonism make him a terrible GOP primary candidate. The Repug primaries are still winner-take-all, right? That hurts a guy like him too. Early on a bunch of 2nds would be fine if delegates were awarded proportionally, but in the winner-take-all, he might get creamed.
Pawlenty/Polenta is going to win the GOP. And get Mondaled in the general (well, he'll get OK and UT in addition to MN).
i recall reading some article somewhere (maybe here. dave probably posted) that said the republican field looks a lot like the democratic field the year bill clinton came out of nowhere. i don't wonder if that could happen here. these guys are all a bunch of yawners.
maybe Mitch Daniels would be the Clintonian outsider. Post-Clintonian, actually, in that he admits to smoking pot and taking LSD in college.
But, Mitch is listed at 5'7", but is probably more like 5'4". As a rule, if a guy is shorter than my 6-year old son, he probably won't win the White House.
Are you guys forgetting Ron Paul? Oh please, oh please, oh please!
^^ Oh but he doesn't pass the Jess Johnson height test. There's always something.
It's definitely a seemingly low-weight bunch and I don't know that someone else will burst onto the scene. I think the close, astute campaign watchers (like us) were probably aware of Clinton in 1991/1992. I mean, what year did he give his painfully long DNC address? I really can't think of any other GOP officials who could enter this thing. Christie seems like he would generate the biggest buzz.
That said, we shouldn't forget that 1) most non-Barack fans saw him as pretty light-weight in 2007 and 2) despite being a horrid candidate, John Kerry almost won in 2004. Whether or not the eventual GOP nominee is taller than Jess, I feel like so much could happen in the next couple years that despite the fact the Barack seems so strong, it could be an alarmingly close race.
