i know, it's crazy! what do we want here, guys? santorum or mitt? i think mitt since he turns off the base and doesn't have a lot of swing state support. maybe i should send him a donation.
Yeah, I found myself wondering how to feel about this, too -- it never occurred to me that Santorum might actually get some traction. He'd definitely fire up the base, but Santorum can't bring in the independents the way Mitt may be able to. Dunno. I think Mitt is still their best bet.
I agree with you, Penny, Mitt is the GOP's best bet. And that's kind of sad. I still think he'll get the nomination but if Santorum somehow gets it, his radicalism will really come to the fore. I mean, he's been going around defending the Crusades!
hmm, i dunno. i'm still leaning toward santorum as the candidate with a better chance to beat obama, at least as things stand right now. some recent polling:
"According to the survey, Santorum Republicans are also much more highly motivated than Romney Republicans, with more than half of Santorum's voters saying they strongly support him, compared to less than four in ten Romney voters - and enthusiasm for Santorum as the eventual nominee is highest among the four remaining challengers," adds Holland.
Are Republicans happy with the remaining choices in the field? The poll indicates the answer is yes, but satisfaction with current candidates has slipped 11 points since the fall. And the eventual winner may receive a less-than-enthusiastic response from the GOP rank and file. Only a third say they would be enthusiastic about a Santorum victory, and that puts him at the top of the field. Only one in five say they would be enthusiastic if Romney were the nominee.
I think that Santorum's coasting right now because among the general voting populace, he's still fairly unknown. Once people get to know him, I expect his favorability (is that a word?) numbers to drop.
This is a man who is: 1) not only against abortion in all cases but openly against contraception, 2) has said that homosexuality is the road to bestiality, 3) has criticized two-income families and working women for destroying the traditional family, 4) was on the front lines of the Terry Schiavo debacle, 5) supports walling off the border with Mexico, 6) openly calls for attacking Iran, and 7) has defended the Crusades.
Those are all nice, red meat stances for the right wing but turn off moderates. Remember, as an incumbent senator, he lost Bob Casey by 18%, the largest margin of loss by a Republican incumbent ever. This is a man who wears out his welcome.
