But then ... why are rural areas conservative? Please tell me that logic isn't incomprehensible. (Highly flawed, yes, but ya follow me, right?)

Maybe people who live and work in rural areas see nature more as something to be controlled and harnessed, whereas folks like us try to commune with nature to get a break from our normal hustle and bustle.
Ooh, Barney might have inspired his party. Check out this quote from Baron Hill (D-IN) at a town hall:
"You'll have choices, regardless of what the detractors tell you. They are lying. That's a strong word, but it's true."

Ok, arguably not relevant to the discussion.
imagine if they conducted research of people who actually spend time in nature, instead of just looking at slides of nature.
anyway, what they were asking them to do "visualize trees, smell the air" etc. is a form of meditation. i suspect that played a big role in the feelings of connectedness and generosity.
interesting stuff.
