I understand why he wants to wait to release them until he has the nomination locked up, he’s probably very rightly afraid of the firestorm they’ll create. But I am completely shocked that he still hasn’t come up with some decent messaging around the issue. The question isn’t a surprise at this point, it has become a huge issue. Very puzzling.
I wonder when he will release them. I can’t see him wanting the story to stay alive through April. Even waiting until Super Tuesday could be a stretch. Maybe he’ll wait until after Florida? That would give him a month for the story to run its course before Super Tues.
I agree that it's baffling that he hasn't come up with a response yet. Newt knew they were going to ask about his ex-wife during the debate last night and he had his response ready to go. Romney still stumbles.
The best case scenario that I can see for Mitt is that he holds off the hounds until he's sewn up the nomination and then releases the returns hoping that there will be enough time for the story to die down before the major campaigning for the general starts.
The other possibility is that his returns show some really underhanded bullshit. The heat would only intensify if it turns out he's managed to hide enough wealth offshore to make his effective tax rate even lower than 15%. I think people would howl if his rate is even as low as 14%.
