First of all, I don't consider this post to be a break in my Palin embargo. Really, it concerns McCain's laughable claims to being a reformer and his awkward embrace of the need for more regulatory oversight after 26 years of championing the opposite. In Katie Couric's interview of Palin, she asked for examples in McCain's career, other than recent warnings about Fannie and Freddie, when McCain pushed for greater financial regulation. The eventual answer? "I'll try to find you some and I'll bring 'em to you." Details and video here.
One more thing about the original maverick. Sure, he "suspended" his campaign, but also distributed talking points to his minions on how they should talk about his principled move. But, someone accidentally sent the memo to the Colorado Independent. Oops.

Dave + Sarah sittin' in a tree....
Anyhow, first McCain lost George Will. Now the Editorial page of the Wall Street Journal.
"Last we checked, the President of the United States was still George W. Bush, the Secretary of the Treasury was still Henry Paulson, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve was still Ben Bernanke, and Congress still had 533 members not running for President who are at least nominally competent to debate and pass legislation.
So count us as mystified by Senator John McCain's decision yesterday to suspend his campaign and call for a postponement in Friday's first Presidential debate so that he and Barack Obama can work out a consensus bill to stabilize the financial system. This is supposed to be evidence of leadership?"
wow. the mcc's must be scrambling right now. even more than they were yesterday.
here's how this might play out. clearly, palin just can not get in front of any other reporters. they spend too much time doing damage control afterwards (see McC's appearance on CBS News last night, and then the fallout from that on Letterman). i suspect she does no more interviews (unless it's US Magazine or similar) and bails on the debate. they must be thinking the negative press from her pulling out of the debate is better than all the fodder from her actually speaking somewhat extemporaneously for 2 hours.
Can they possibly get away with pulling her out of the debate? That's crazy.
I know what Biden's debate strategy should be, though. A whole lot of, "I'm going to defer the rest of my time to Governor Palin for her opinions on this issue."
wonkette says it best:
John McCain will personally bomb North Korea in an ancient fighter plane with a Muppet as his co-pilot before he allows Sarah Palin to debate anything besides a goldfish. A dead goldfish.
